Literary treats

I am all excited the treasures I recently purchased at Book Baron in Anaheim, the 20,000-square foot, landmark book store, which is closing down in December. I’m sorry it took me so long to discover the place; my colleague Valerie Takahama wrote a story about its impending closure and I figured I had to get over there before it disappeared.
I sat on the floor in the “Dance” section and went through each tome one by one.
I purchased “Ballet: an Illustrated History” by Mary Clarke and Clemente Crisp (Universe Books,1973); “In Performance: A Companion to the Classics of the Dance” by Nancy Reynolds (co-author of the wonderful “No Fixed Points”) and Susan Reimer-Torn (1980, Harmony Books); and two books about Rudolf Nureyev: one a gorgeous, pictorial history (Phaidon, 1993) from throughout the Russian ballet star’s career and the other a slim book called “Nureyev in Paris”  (1975, Modernismo). The latter records Nureyev’s rehearsals from the 1960s with Roland Petit and Zizi Jeanmaire for a televised production of Petit’s “Le Jeune Homme et la Mort.”

And for all the Nureyev fans out there, PBS’ Great Performances will air a new documentary entitled “Nureyev: The Russian Years” on 9 p.m., Aug. 29 on KCET, channel 28.

And in the meantime, check out Book Baron. My books were discounted 40 percent.
