‘The Ornament Show’

Season’s greetings, folks!
I went to an opening at J. Flynn Gallery in Costa Mesa over the weekend. My good friend Ashley Eckenweiler – who has done special events for the O.C. Museum of Art and publicity for other O.C. art organizations – is the curator of “Tree Trimming II: The Ornament Show.”
The medium of choice is — you guessed it — ornaments. During the opening, I noticed that some were big and some were small. Some were cute and some were grotesque. Most of them were clever, utilizing a small space to express something seasonal and artistic.
Twenty-eight artists have contributed to this show, which runs through Dec. 22. Yuka Yamaguchi has some nice ornaments, and Nathan Spoor combined an extraterrestrial monster with a gift-giving human in “Sharing the Memory of Snow,” pictured below.
Someone who goes by the name “Inky Dreadfuls” also has some interesting contributions.
Though they’re not quite ornaments, Brian Viveros’ oils on board combine punk (and cigarettes) with the Christmas spirit. At the top of this blog is “Ho Ho Ho,” a 2007 oil on board.
The ornaments are priced at $35 to $500 and up. If you look carefully, you might find a deal and a nice addition to your Christmas tree/art collection.
J. Flynn Gallery is at 2950-A Randolf Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Hours are noon-6 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. The phone number is 714-708-3504. For more info, you can click here.
