Art happenings around town

 “Daisy Chain” by Sara Simon

It’s the time of year when area museums are not opening a whole lot of new exhibitions (the Getty Center is an exception). But L.A. and O.C. art galleries are keeping busy, particularly with holiday art enthusiasts looking for that special gift.

In Orange County, we have “Guy Ferrer: Territories” at SCAPE (Southern California Art Projects and Exhibitions) in Corona del Mar, Sylvia Torres and Lisa Lala at Marion Meyer Gallery on North Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, a holiday group exhibition at Wendt Gallery on South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, and Glenn Ness and Robert LaDuke at Sue Greenwood Fine Art, LB.

There’s a “Naked” group show at Space on Spurgeon in Santa Ana, Moldovan painter Tatiyana Kraevskaya at 19th St. West Gallery in Costa Mesa, and a “Small Works” group show at Sarah Bain Gallery in Anaheim.

Julie Lee’s @Space Contemporary gallery in Santa Ana is featuring two artists, Alison Foshee and Sara Simon, in “Courting Allusion.” The two artists use various materials to explore notions of power, perfection, commercialism and control.

Foshee transforms everyday materials into shapes that mimic naturally occurring patterns. She uses office staples, balsa wood and candy wrappers.

Simon starts with paper and clay to create a tiger, poop, daisies and other animals. Her “Daisy Chain” daisy-covered skeleton sculpture is pictured above. Julie Lee, who also works at the Bowers Museum, has done her best to try to create a fertile contemporary art scene at her Main Street gallery, which has been running since March.

So amid your holiday shopping madness, check out one of these art shows. They’ll be happy to see you.
