Via Albeniz and the streets of OC

Streets named for composers are relatively rare, at least in the part of the world that I live in. So, I was surprised when, out running an errand the other day, I saw Via Albeniz, not far from where I live in southern Orange County. Of course, I thought, it might be named after someone else, but no, I found, upon getting out my Thomas Bros. Just inside the gated community that Albeniz leads into are a cluster of streets named for Spanish composers, including Granados, Rodrigo (he must still have been alive when they named it), Sarasate, Torroba and Turina. No Falla, but there is a Silvestre … named for (yes, I know he’s Mexican) Revueltas, perhaps?

Previously: World streets, part 6 and World streets, Part IV.

I hope that there are some interesting stories behind the selections of the street names for these neighborhoods. I’d like to imagine the Opera Lover/draftsman slaving over his Subdivision Map and working in the names of composers who have met much to him over the years. Certainly the names suggest a more tranquil and human and harmonious neighborhood than would, let’s say, Curtis LeMay Boulevard or The Warren G. Harding Parkway. I’d be really happy to live on Sibelius (rather than Second) Street. I hope the answer isn’t something as prosaic as that they just came off some Planning Department’s list of available street names

  • They ought to have some streets named after Grand Inquisitors.

Actually, I would be very happy to live on Sibelius Second Street.

Sage, there’s an artsy beant to many of the street names in that neighborhood, a gated community for folks 55 and up. There are also streets named for El Greco and Neruda, etc. At the end of my own block (not in the gated comm.) is a street named Lope de Vega.

I’d like to live on Brahms’ First Street. In fact, I often do……..
