San Diego Opera 2009 season

November 7th, 2008, 1:26 pm · 4 Comments · posted by Timothy Mangan, music critic

In the light of the sad developments this week, San Diego Opera is a company worth considering for your opera needs. It performs in downtown San Diego, which is a little more than 70 miles from south county, and 85 miles from Huntington Beach. Below is a brief schedule. Click on the opera titles for full casting (some of which is very tempting).

Jan. 24, 27, 30; Feb. 1, 4: “Tosca”
Feb. 14, 17, 20, 22: “Don Quichotte”
Mar. 28, 31; April 3, 5, 8: “Rigoletto”
April 18, 21, 24, 26: “Peter Grimes”
May 9, 12, 15, 17, 20: “Madama Butterfly”

  • Bill Keiser says:

What a chance to see the Furlanetto Don Quichotte. That should be worth the price of the Season in itself. And I know from personal experience that Griffey’s Grimes is a monumental recreation — neither Pears nor Vickers but his own imposing and terrifying rendition. And since, for many Orange County residents, the San Diego Civic Auditorium is no further away than the LA Music Center, let’s hope there will be a healthy flow of OC opera lovers and their ticket buying dollars next year. Hope you will have some time to cover the SD Season.

  • Matt Leone says:

Thanks for the link to San Diego. As a sometimes season ticket holder to Opera Pacific, I am mourning the loss. But living two miles from the train station in Fullerton gives me stress-free access to San Diego. Peter Grimes got my eye, and then I read Bill Keiser’s review of Griffey as Grimes above and am now really looking forward to it.

  • Tim Mangan says:

    Matt or Bill,

Do you happen to know how far the train station is from the SD Opera house? And I wonder if one can catch a train back to OC at night, after the opera.

  • Tim,

The train station is about 8 blocks from the theatre.

Even easier however is the fact that the train station is across the street from the trolley station and the trolley stops right at the backdoor of the theatre.

The train you are looking for is the Pacific Surf Liner — however it will only apply for our matinee performances.
