Adam Shankman, the director who brought “Hairspray” so successfully to the screen long before anyone dreamed of mounting it on Broadway, will reportedly helm a remake of “Bye Bye Birdie.” The 1960 Broadway hit was made into an equally popular 1963 movie starring Ann-Margret as an excitable teen whose path crosses with that of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis-like pop music star.
Shankman has signed a deal with Columbia Pictures, but details are still being worked out. He’s considering resetting the story in the hip-hop era. Geez, I hope that “improvement” dies on the vine.
And yes, we did choose this news bite just so we could run a photo of Ann-Margret. Are you happy now, Mr. Mangan?
