I know this doesn’t quite fall within the Arts Blog’s parameters, but I had a helluva good time chatting with Dick Dale, O.C.’s king of surf guitar, on his yacht a couple of weeks back.
I finally got around to transcribing the three-hour interview (you don’t interview Dick — you just turn on the tape recorder and he GOES) and writing it up as a Morning Read. Enjoy! We’ll try to get some samples from his latest CD on the site later today.
My favorite Dale reminiscence got cut from the story. It’s about the first time he met Keith Moon:
“I’m playing a concert three nights in a row, I think it was at the Whiskey, and this guy comes up to me when I’m singing a song. He grabs the mike and goes, ‘Dick Dale!’ While I’m singing! He goes, ‘My name’s Keith Moon of The Who.’ And I said, ‘Who?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, exactly!’”
